Self Regulation

Self Regulation is defined as children being able to control their emotions. This comes earlier in childhood for some while others it takes a little longer. A lot can depend on this such as home life, siblings, which child they are, school life and development, just to name a few.

Some examples of self regulation would be if a child did not get to play the game he or she wanted to a p.e., they refrained from throwing a tantrum. If the child didn’t get to eat the food he or she wanted, they ate what they could without a fight. These would be a couple of examples of self regulation.

One way a teacher could model this for their students would be when a student acted appropriately when they did not get their way, they are rewarded in front of the class. Allow the rest of the class to see that it’s positive reinforcement to not throw a tantrum.

Another way would be provide opportunities for students to make the right choice on how to act when things did not go their way. In other words, do not always cater to them. Show them that it is ok to not have things go your way all of the time.
